Edwina Sayon

10/25/09

English 107

Hamlet act, one scene two soliloquies Hamlet first soliloquy prompted by the death of his father and his mother marrying his uncle two months later. Hamlet feelings toward his mother changed after she married his uncle. Hamlet over all soliloquy describes two major themes: religion and Greek and Roman Allusions. Hamlet uses imagery, metaphor, and comparison to get this across. By doing so he compared how his father treated his mother while a live and how his uncle is nothing compared to his father by using gender statics and his feeling toward death.

“Oh, that this too too sullied flesh would melt, thaw and resolve itself into a dew!” Hamlet mean Ah, I wish my dirty flesh could melt away into a vapor. He wishes he could die. The word “sullied” mean sold and also could be contaminated. Hamlet uses visual image to capture his audience thinking. Meaning he want his audience to be able to feel his feelings of sorrow. Resolve is the opposite of dissolve. He uses the word resolve in stand of dissolve to show the overall affect of death. By Hamlet dying will help resolve what he’s going through, even though he couldn’t take his own life. “Or that the everlasting had not fixed his canon ‘against self-slaughter! O God, God! How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world!” The first sentence continual by saying “or that God had not made a law against suicide. Oh God, God! How tired, stale, and pointless life is to me.” Life means nothing to hamlet right now. If only he could commit suicide he would’ve but God is against murder. Hamlet religion and his believe are Important to him. Hamlet must be a Christian because in the bible one of the twelve commandments stated that people as in everyone should not kill. He also uses an unweeded garden to compare the social disorder of live.

“Fie on’t, ah fie!’Tis an unweeded garden that grows to seed. Things rank and gross in nature possess it merely. That it should come to this. All hamlet mean is damn it! It’s like a garden that no one’s taking care of and that’s growing wild and only nasty weeds would grow in it. The word fie means disgust, meaning hamlet is disgusted with life. “Things rank and gross in nature possess it merely”. This sentence is a metaphor for social disorder and also a visual image. “That it should come to this. But two months dead-nay, not so much, not two.” This show how quick hamlet father has been forgotten. “That it should come to this.” Everyone has forgotten about hamlets’ father even his own mother that she married in some months. The only person mourn his father death is him and everybody moved on so quickly. “So excellent a king, that was to this Hyperion to a satyr. So loving to my mother that he might be beteem the winds of heaven visit her face too roughly.-Heaven and earth, Must I remember?” Hamlet believes that his father was an excellent king when he was alive. His fathers so loved his mother that he kept the wind from blowing too hard on her face. “That he might be beteem”, means that Hamlet father may not allow anything to happen to his wife hamlets’ mother. Hamlet father was better than his brother. He was superior to his brother as a god is to a beast. A Hyperion is a Greek god of the sun and a Satyr is half human and half goat. The Sun God is high and superior to a human goat. Hamlet father was a better king. He was great to his wife and his people. “Why, she would hang on him As if increase of appetite had grown by what it fed on, and yet, within a month-Let me not think on ‘t. Frailty, thy name is woman!” Hamlet mother would hang on his father, the more she was with him; she couldn’t get enough of him. Yet, within a month she forgot. Hamlet is disgusted by this so he didn’t even want to keep talking about it. He thinks his mother is just like a woman, such as, she’s so weak. This is a misogynistic attitude of Shakespeare’s time. Women were known to be frailty. Women were looked upon to be nothing compared to men. “A little month, or ere those shoes were old with which she followed my poor father’s body, Like Niobe, all tears. Why she, even she- O God, a beast that wants discourse of reason would mourned longer!”Even before she had broken in the shoes she wore to his funeral, crying like crazy-Even an animal would have mourned its mate longer. Hamlet treats to say that his mom is less then an animal. She didn’t have strong feelings for his father. “Like Niobe (a Greek mythical figure) cries like crazy. Niobe offended the goddess Leto and was punished by the death of her children and turned into a store statue and weeps forever and even his mother can’t do that but in stand she married to his uncle.

“- married with my uncle, my father’s brother, but no more like my father than Hercules: within a month, ere yet the salt of most unrighteous tears had left the flushing in her galled eyes, She married. Oh, most wicked speed, to post with such dexterity to incestuous sheets!” Hamlet tries to say that his mother married his uncle which is his father brother. His uncle is much like his father as he is to Hercules. “Less than a month after my father’s death”, this repeating line in this speech shows his feelings toward his mother for marrying his uncle and how disgust he is with her. The tears on her face haven dried before she gotten married. The word “Unrighteous tears” means her insincere tears. This shows how unfaithful she was to her husband. “Galled eyes”, is irritated/sore and it kept the iambic pentameter form. “O most wicked speed, to post with such dexterity to incestuous sheets! ” Hamlet felt that his mother was too quick to jump into bed with his uncle. “Incestuous “was forbidden by Judaeo (a Christian tradition), for a man to marry his brother’s wife. “It is not it cannot come to good, But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue”, no good can come out of what his mother has done. Hamlet felt it was bad but kept it in silence. All he did was just complaining throughout this soliloquy when he could have expressed himself. He acted like a teenager when he’s really in his thirties.

Over all, Hamlet soliloquy was his feelings toward his mother and his mourning for his father. He over reacted when he could of at least tell someone how he felt but he decided two whine about it.

By doing so he compared how his father treated his mother while a live and how his uncle is nothing compared to his father by using gender statics and his feeling toward death.

“Those Winter Sundays”

Robert E. Hayden’s “Those Winter Sundays” chronicles on adult’s reflection on his father. Through this reflection, the speaker’s attitude slowly change from ignorance to appreciation over the years. This complex attitude is conveyed through the author’s use of tactile imagery, sound devices, literal and figurative language from each stanza and paragraphs.

The father’s devotion to his son is made immediately apparent the reader. Hayden’s use of religiously connected words, mainly “Sunday” in the opening line, underscore his devotion to his son. “Sunday” is a different form of devotion from a father to the speaker:his son and work. The word “too” shows how much the speaker father works. The speaker father gets up early on Sunday even though he worked through out the week, which shows he has little rest and rather work then spend time with his son( the speaker). “Sundays too my father got up early”,shows that maybe the speaker has one parent:his father. The author also uses sentence structure and sound devices to demonstrate repetition of the fathers’ devotion. The first sentence stop at early and the second sentence continue and stop at cold. “Sundays too my father got up early(stop) and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold. This structure repeats throughout the poem making the first sentence shorter then the second sentence in length. The author uses sound devices like consonance and cacophony (blueblack, ached, cracked, cold), and syntax and by stating that the speaker has a cracked hands that ached from labor also show how much the speakers’ father works. The speaker Father is only devoted to his work.

In the second passage the author uses Onomipe words like “slowly, rises, and dress” to show that the speaker didn’t wanted to get dress which switches roles from the father to the speaker. Meaning that the speaker is not devoted to his father command. The repetition of the “s” sound and the figurative of “sleep”,the word “chronic”, and the figurative “splintering of the cold” reveal the son’s lack of appreciation and awareness for his father’s love. This shows the speaker over all non appreciation toward his father. “ Fearing the chronic angers of that house shows the speaker and his father has a lack of communication.

“Speaking indifferently to him”, shows the speaker shift changes in his tone toward his father . The starting sentence from passage three shows how the speaker whole way of thinking change from ignorance to appreciation over time. The author words choice changes from harsh cacophony sounds to soft and warm sounds. The “o” sound of some of the words help to betray the speakers thoughts making his reader aware of the speaker feelings toward his father.”What did I know”, being repeated twice show the speaker realization of his ignorance towards his father love. The speaker realize the importance of his father work on Sundays, polishing his good shoes, and his attend to drive out the cold. The word “driven” shows how heroic his father is and the word “offices” shows meaning or function of his father duty and being able to help the speaker. The over all word “ Austere” draw figurative meaning of the title winter, shifting the mind set of the speaker joining everything together.

Without tactile imagery, sound device, literal, and figurative language; Robert Hayden wouldn’t be able to make connections, show how the speaker attitude, reflection on his childhood, and his father change over time from ignorance to appreciation.

A Mercy paper rough draft

Toni Morrison’s A Mercy identify the rules of each gender roles; Being in this century rule by man, woman has no protection and or option but to obey their command.

Woman were abuse and their were nothing done about it. Florens and the blacksmith was relationship is complicated. Their relationship weren’t based on everyone feelings. It was just about the Blacksmith and what he want her to do for him. She was just their to please him. She goes where ever he want her too and do as he say. A relationship is each couple working together. You cant work with someone if they’re in charge of you. “ He takes her when and where he wants and she hunts him like a she-wolf if he’s not in her eye. If he’s off at his bloomer y for a day or two,she sulks still he comes back hauling the blooms of ore.”(151). This just shows what type of person he is or capable of being. Forced to do as they were told even if it was wrong. Were they not humans? Everybody has the right to do as they please not just man. The blacksmith know how Florens felt about but he insist of treating her bad. He didn’t care about her. She just an object to him. When he wanted sex then he wants her around but after that she wilderness. He said things to her that was uncalled for. She knows that she’s a slave he didn’t have to tell her. He called her names such as wilderness and saying that she has a mind of a slave. Of course she has a mind of a slave because she’s a slave and he knew she were when he met her. Even if she could have said something or at least stand up for her self, he wouldn’t let her. Florens weren’t the only one that was mistreated,Sorrow and Lina was too.

Lina got beat by her boyfriend and sorrow got rapped. “ There is no rum the second time nor the next, she is saying , but those times he uses the fist of his hand when he has anger, when she spills lamp oil on his breeches or his finds a tiny worm in the stew. Then come a day when he uses first his fist and then a whip—I am already fourteen and I ought to know better, she is saying. She tells me how it is to walk town lanes wiping blood from her nose with her fingers, that because her eyes are closing she stumbles and people believes sher is in liquor like is many natives and tell her so. The Presbyterians stare at her face and the blood wipes on her clothes but say nothing” (115). people watched her walk in the street bleeding and they didn’t help they just allowed him to hurt her. I mean other thought she was drunk but the Presbyterian know she was bleeding but didn’t care. If they did tried to help her he would of still got a way with it because he can. No one can’t stop them. They’re man so whatever man choice to do goes. If she die from him hitting her then she just died. If a slave hits their owner they got punish or kill, when a man hits a woman they get a way with it. Woman are just the same as slaves.

Not all woman were slave but they all were treated as slaves. It didn’t matter how old you were if your a female you got treated as a object. Slave woman had to protect their children from man because they were rapped and abuse just like their mothers. They couldn’t really protect their children because they are propriety. “ She watched over her son like a hawk as I did over you. But it never does any lasting good, my love. There was no protection. None. Certainly not with you vice fro shoes. It was as though you were hurrying up your breasts and hurrying also the lips of an old couple, understand me, there was o protection and nothing in the catechism to tell them no.”(162-163). Woman has no law against man so they’re not protected at all. The only thing might protect them is their man from other man but not from them.

Therefore woman doesn’t belong in the 1700 century but are just there because of creation. If you are not protected from the one that you call father, husband, boyfriend, and brother then who can you turn too? Not another female because they’re in the same shoes as you. They’re all not protected or has a say in that society ruled by man.
